After being on hiatus for the last four years, the White House has resumed the nearly 70 year old practice of sending special congratulatory or condolence letters to citizens. Upon request, the President and the First Lady will send signed cards to citizens in recognition of personal milestones.
Citizens, family members and friends can request a greeting for themselves or others on the White House website. Requests can also be submitted through a local senator or representative's office.
Some of the milestones that cards may be requested for include:
- Adoption
- Baby's Birth
- Birthday
- Condolence Letter
- Eagle Scout
- Girl Scout Gold Award
- Graduation
- New U.S. Citizen
- Retirement
- Spiritual Achievement
- Wedding
- Wedding Anniversary
- Other Special Achievements
To ensure your requested letter arrives on time, the White House recommends submitting your greeting request at least six weeks in advance of the special date. While every effort will be made to honor all requests, if the request is not received on time, the letter may not arrive as requested.
