The Thresher dolphins, the submarine warfare qualification device worn by the late Lt. Cmdr. John Harvey, commanding officer of USS Thresher (SSN 593) before its tragic loss, were passed on to Lt.j.g. Thomas M. Grubish at the Submarine Birthday Ball on April 13. The dolphins are presented annually to the newest qualified junior officer at the ball. The Thresher and its 129 sailors and civilians were lost at sea while engaged in a test drive April 10, 1969. It was the first nuclear-powered submarine lost at sea and the largest loss of life in submarine force history. To honor and remember the sailors lost aboard the Thresher, Harvey's dolphins have been worn by a submariner ever since. Read more at Navy.mil.
